Great Lakes Fishery Trust (GLFT)
(1) GLFT Stewardship Grant Program Proposals
DEADLINE: JANUARY 15th, 2025
DEADLINE: JANUARY 15th, 2025
The Great Lakes Fishery Trust (GLFT) is now accepting proposals under its Great Lakes Stewardship grant program. Through this request for proposals (RFP), the GLFT invites proposals focused on place-based stewardship education (PBSE). PBSE is a method of teaching and learning that extends the walls of the classroom into the local community and landscape through experiential, hands-on learning for studying natural, built, and social environments. Proposals are due by Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. EST, and must be submitted through the GLFT website. Please note the next Great Lakes Stewardship PBSE RFP is scheduled to open in the 2027 program year.
This funding program will increase awareness and understanding of the ecology of the Great Lakes, enabling residents to serve as stewards and advocate for strategies that support the long-term sustainability of Great Lakes fisheries. Priority will be given to projects focusing on Lake Michigan and its stewardship, by Michigan residents. This RFP will be used for the disbursement of up to $500,000 in grants in 2025.
Those interested in learning more about the program’s priorities and the application process are encouraged to attend the Great Lakes Stewardship webinar at 10:00 a.m. EST on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. The event will take place over Zoom, and staff will discuss program priorities, provide information on the online application, summarize the review process, and answer applicant questions.
Register for the Great Lakes Stewardship webinar today!
The GLFT updated its priorities and schedule for its Great Lakes Stewardship 2025 grant program’s strategic plan. Following a process different than previous years, we intend to issue a second RFP later in 2025 requesting proposals to support fishing education.
For detailed information on funding priorities, requirements, and proposal submission processes, visit the GLFT website. Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact GLFT staff prior to submission of a grant proposal to discuss project goals and alignment with GLFT priorities. Staff is also available to assist applicants with navigating the online submission process. For questions and comments, please contact Meagan O’Brien, grant manager, at 517-371-7468 or [email protected].

Grants awarded through this RFP are intended for:
- Protection, enhancement, and/or restoration of valuable Great Lakes fisheries habitat that supports the long-term, sustainable, natural reproduction of species now supported by hatchery production or the rehabilitation of lake whitefish, lake trout, lake sturgeon, or other important Great Lakes fish populations.
- Restoration of Great Lakes wetlands.
- Removal of dams or barriers to restore fish passage (see Policy on Funding Habitat Protection and Restoration Projects [Fish Passage and Other Dam Management]).
- Project planning, including community engagement, engineering, and/or design work, that is a necessary precursor to a project supporting one of the above goals.
- Field inventories that comprehensively identify road-stream crossings and other barriers at the watershed scale for watersheds identified as high priority in planning or other management documents. Inventory methods should follow the Great Lakes Road Stream Crossing Inventory Instructions to ensure that information is collected consistently among watersheds. Applicants seeking funding to conduct inventories should be well positioned to implement restoration plans based upon the results.
- Targeted acquisition of land or easements to protect essential habitat.

Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR)
(1) CIGLR Accepting Proposals for 2025 Graduate Research Fellowships
DEADLINE: JANUARY 31, 2025
The Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) is soliciting proposals from Regional Consortium universities for three (3) Graduate Research Fellowships sponsored by NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL) and the University of Michigan. The goals of these fellowships are: 1) to provide training and educational opportunities for students who will become the next generation of Great Lakes researchers, 2) enhance collaborations between CIGLR Regional Consortium partners and PIs at NOAA GLERL, and 3) increase student retention within the freshwater sciences. We seek to use these fellowships to increase diversity in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and math), and thus, strongly encourage proposals that support students from groups which have been traditionally underrepresented in government and academic workforces.
Eligibility: Graduate Research Fellowships may be used to support any graduate student working with a
tenure-track faculty member from a CIGLR Regional Consortium university**. Proposals may be submitted by either the graduate student or faculty member. Prior CIGLR fellowship awardees are eligible to re-apply for additional funds.
Deadline to submit proposal: 5pm ET on January 31, 2025
If interested, please click here to learn more.
**If you or your community, Nation, Tribe, or organization are not on the list of consortium members, Catherine Febria from the University of Windsor has offered to act as a supporting consortium member for anyone who may need assistance. Please email Emma Pirie at [email protected] or Catherine Febria at [email protected] for more details.
