Indigenous Great Lakes Network Community Learners Support Program & Scholarship Competition
The Indigenous Environmental Institute (IEI) at Trent University partnered with the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC) in May 2024 to help support the development of the Indigenous Great Lakes Network (IGLN). As part of this partnership, the GLFC has also supported the development of a Community Learners Program and Scholarship Competition. To guide the development and implementation of this program, a Community Learners and Scholarship committee was formed in January 2025.
The Community Learners Program aims to assist Indigenous learners of all ages within Indigenous communities, Nations, or Tribal Organizations surrounding the Great Lakes. Activities eligible for support through this fund include, but are not limited to, community training, participation in environmental research or monitoring, and engagement in knowledge exchange and intergenerational learning.
The Scholarship Competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students at Trent University and supports projects that are conducted with, for, and/or by an Indigenous community or Nation. Eligible projects should include in-community research time and demonstrate a high potential for contributing to the understanding of a Great Lakes issue of importance to an Indigenous community or Nation while also enhancing the student’s education in Indigenous Great Lakes environmental issues.
